Thai Dramas, also commonly referred to as lakorns, are a popular genre of fiction in Thai television. In Thai, they are called "ละครโทรทัศน์" ("lakhon thorathat"; lit. television drama) or "ละคร" (lakhon or lakorn). Most Thai dramas are adaptations of pre-existing novels.

Channels[]
Broadcast[]
A series usually runs for about three months, broadcasting two or three episodes per week. An episode of a prime-time drama is usually two hours long, including commercials, whereas regular lakorns normally run for either an hour or 30 minutes. When internationally broadcast, the runtime is around 45 minutes per episode. A channel will usually broadcast three dramas at once during different timeslots, each featuring a separate story.
The most common timeslots are Monday–Tuesday, Wednesday–Thursday, and Friday–Sunday. They are generally shown at prime-time on Thai television channels, starting at 20:30. After the 2014 Thai coup d'état, the lakorns were briefly interrupted or broadcast on delay on Friday nights due to simulcast of the government-required Weekly Address by the Prime Minister of Thailand. The Weekly Address would end between 20:50 and 21:00, after which the lakorns would resume broadcast. In July 2019, the Weekly Address was discontinued shortly before the new cabinet was established after the 2019 Thai general election. Featured dramas are usually broadcast right after the news to gather more views, while smaller productions and shorter dramas are broadcast between 17:00 and 18:00. Sometimes, if a drama is popular enough, it is re-run several years after its initial release, generally in the afternoon.
The largest broadcasters are Channel 3, Channel 5, and Channel 7, as well as, to a lesser extent, Channel 9. Unlike other Asian countries, Thai actors and actresses are also often not signed to a third-party entertainment company but directly to the broadcaster. Therefore, channels also compete for who has the most popular celebrities signed under them and try to attract viewers through their cast.
International broadcasts[]
Thai dramas are becoming more and more popular overseas.
In Cambodia, several television channels aired Thai dramas instead of local ones until they were banned from broadcast in early 2003. It is, however, still legal to sell and purchase lakorns physically and digitally. Dao Pra Sook was the most popular series for Khmer viewers.
After the success of Nang Tard, Singapore started broadcasting lakorns one or two weeks after they aired in Thailand. In China, most Thai dramas are aired on Anhui Television. They are dubbed into Chinese before being broadcasted.
Thai TV soap operas are popular overseas in countries such as Cambodia and Laos.
Malaysia used to broadcast some Thai soaps with considerable success, but currently Thai soap operas are almost absent on local television, but are sold on DVDs two to three months after being broadcast on Thai television.
Vietnam's VTV1 broadcasts Thai soap operas one day after showing in Thailand, usually not dubbed or subtitled.
However, Thai TV soap operas have begun to become popular in Vietnam as Song Kram Nang Fah aired successfully in that country.
Thai soap operas were also broadcast in the Philippines for a short while in 1998, but were cancelled due to low ratings.
You're My Destiny is the first lakorn to appear in the Philippines in 20 years. It aired on GMA Network as part of Heart of Asia's 15th anniversary offering. It is also the first lakorn to be part of the Heart of Asia block.
Thai soap operas are available in Nepal alongside English language, Hindi, Korean and Chinese dramas.
Thai soap operas are available to stream with subtitles on Iflix in Sri Lanka.
Recently, a historical romantic drama set in the Ayutthaya Kingdom Love Destiny (2018) became hit across countries including Russia
Common formula[]
Like dramas from other countries, Thai dramas feature very distinctive, though often formulaic, characters and narrative conventions. Though some stray from these conventions, most adhere to them, especially if they're popular among Thai viewers.
Thai dramas generally follow two people who fall in love with each other over the course of the series. The male (พระเอก; Phra Ek) and female leads (นางเอก; Nang Ek) tend to be played by the currently most popular actors. Throughout the dramas, at least one antagonist, usually female ("นางอิจฉา"; Nang Rai or Nang Itcha), is introduced. The antagonist tries to stop the main characters from becoming lovers, often because they are in love with one of the protagonists themselves. They will do so by attempting to get together with their love interest while getting rid of the other protagonist. The antagonist does not hesitate to go to extreme lengths to steal one lead character from the other, even if the two are about to get married. They also often come from a rich background, behave rudely and nasty, and are manipulative. Sometimes, the antagonist is a ghost instead of a living person. The antagonist very rarely also has a kind side. In the end, all conflicts are resolved, the antagonist receives their punishment, and the main characters get together and sometimes even marry.
Thai dramas aim to get their viewer emotionally involved, whereas Western dramas mostly focus on having the viewer follow the story rationally. This aspect makes Thai dramas more akin to Hispanic telenovelas than Western dramas. Because of this, they are often regarded as melodramatic or even camp. Some screenwriters, directors, and production studios also follow the formula "the more melodramatic, the better" and consciously aim to make the drama as melodramatic as they can. This can lead to situations being heavily exaggerated and unrealistic.
Furthermore, LGBT characters are often used as comic relief. This is, however, mostly not the case in BL (Boys' Love) dramas, which have become increasingly more popular over the recent years, both in Thailand and internationally.
Evolution of common tropes[]
Originally, the male lead in Thai dramas were often member of Thai nobility, usually princes, such as a Mom Chao. To modernize the trope, male leads are now often businessmen from influential families. Sometimes, the female is also a member of the upper class.
Criticism[]
Perpetuation of harmful content[]
Because Thai soap operas generally present a melodramatic storyline featuring simple, one-dimensional characters to appeal to a broader spectrum of viewers and sponsors, they usually do not foster critical insight, reasoning, or problem-solving skills, nor approach problems from multiple perspectives. They are simply set up to create dramatic tension between the characters, which eventually leads to the "showdown" between the protagonists and antagonists.
Since several series adhere to this simple format, some might argue that is might cause some viewers to develop a skewed sense of reality over an extended period of time. At least one critic contends that the recent political developments in Thailand may be at least partially attributable to the negative influence of dramas. The complete disregard of common sense in dramas might cause people to shy away from thinking critically and they, as a result, become prone to manipulation.
Thai Airways controversy[]
In 2008, Thai Airways flight attendants urged the government to remove the prime-time TV drama Songkhram Nang Fah because it showed women flight attendants in short-skirted uniforms fighting over a male pilot. They complained that the soap opera portrayed their job in a negative light.
Violence and graphic content in dramas[]
At a seminar held by the Christian Council of Thailand in 2010, issues were raised involving Thai dramas and the television rating system. The most notable issue was that dramas were broadcast during the day, although they might feature content unsuitable for children, such as graphic portrayals of violence, sexual assault, and consumption of illegal substances.
The portrayal of rape in Thai dramas was especially criticized since rape is often used as a way to take revenge or "true love" emerges from it. In 2014, a study by the Thai Health Promotion Foundation found that roughly 80% of all Thai dramas broadcasted that year depicted rape or sexual violence at some point. Critics constantly urge producers to stop romanticizing the crime as it feeds into the country's culture of gender inequality, especially since perpetrators in dramas are rarely held accountable for their actions and often even win the heart of their victim. However, many directors and producers are still reluctant to remove sexual violence from dramas as such dramas, nicknamed "slap and kiss", have consistently resulted in higher ratings.

According to Thailand's National Research Institute, about 30.000 rape cases are reported each year. The head of the Teeranat Kanjanauaksorn Foundation, a gender equality group, estimated that the real number might even be 10 times higher than official figures suggest, as most rape cases are never reported.
Cultural impact[]
Thai dramas have contributed to popularizing spirits and legends from Thai folklore. They often feature ghosts interacting with the living or are based on traditional Thai legends.
Actors[]
Actors and actresses, referred to in Thai language as dara (stars) Template:Lang, are usually cast in the same roles over and over again. An actress who plays the lead female would assume the same role.
Suvanant Kongying still plays the female lead. The same goes for other roles, such as the friend of the main leads, the bad characters, the servant characters, the mother characters, and others. An "upgrade" or "downgrade" does occur, such as when a female lead assumes the role of the mother, but this is rare. Sornram Teppitak still plays the leading male character. Kob Suvanant Kongying and Num Sornram Theppitak were the highest paid TV actress and actor in Thailand in the 1990s. However, in the past 10 years a new actress has reigned as highest paid in Thailand, Pachrapa Chaichua of channel 7 and Ann Thongprasom of channel 3.
This trend causes problems for the female actors in the leading roles as they age. Thai audiences seem to like their leads young and beautiful and many past female daras have disappeared from the screen once they reach the age of 30 or so. A few defy this norm, such as Marsha Wattanapanich and, even then, she is gradually disappearing. Her latest TV series was 2002's Baung Ban Ja Torn (The Enchanted Bed), which became top rated.
This problem is not as bad for male actors, as can be seen in the prolific career of veteran actor Chatchai Plengpanich. His wife, the once famous Sinjai Plengpanich, has all but disappeared, except for the few commercials seen in primetime.
Among the younger crowd are leading actresses such as Usamanee Waitayanon and Khemanit "Pancake" Jamikorn who have continued to grab ratings despite their ongoing feud. Waitayanon and Jamikorn have come out numerous of times to deny that there is any feuding, but actions prove otherwise. Due to their behavior it is rumored that executives for channel 7, such as Khun Daeng, have called for the women to be disciplined. Waitayanon and Jamikorn have been given a high spotlight due to their feuds and their romantic links to other celebrities such as Golf, a famous singer from the duo better known as Golf Mike. Jamikorn has been linked to romantic interests, including leading actor Sukollawat "Weir" Kanarot.

Thailand has strict censorship laws on films containing nudity, sexual intercourse, smoking opium, or which might offend religious sensibilities. There are no classifications to rate films for different ages so censors often obscure scenes by scratching the celluloid or smudging it with a translucent gel. When actors are playing cards in TV series, a sentence displays that playing cards with money is forbidden by the law.
On Thai television, Chinese, Japanese, American, and Indian films are broadcast. No sex is shown on Thai television, but violence is not uncommon.
A rare censorship appeared in Talay Rissaya when a character's throat got slit with blood everywhere.
Some series are subject to a rating. Most of BBTV Channel 7 programs are usually rated as G-18 (children under 18 should seek parental guidance).
Remakes[]
Since the late–1990s, Thai soap operas are often remakes of old series, but with new actors and minor modifications to their plots. To add spice to older themes, producers add supplementary sex, violence, and vulgarity. The tradition of remakes in Thai soap operas began with the successful lakrons. Shows that have been redone include 1995's Sai Lohit ("Bloodline") starring Sornram Teppitak and Suvanant Kongying which was then followed by Prissana in 2000. Dao Pra Sook also had a remake in 2002. In early–2000, horror-genre soap operas made a comeback with a remake of Tayat Asoon, a witch and black magic soap opera starring Sinjai Plengpanich. Other recent remakes, Poot Pee Saward, Poot Mae Nam Khong, and Susan Khon Pen, combine both love and ghost stories. Remakes of Pob Pee Fa and Dome Tong have been announced. A 2008 remake of the 1994 series, Silamanee, became a hit and generated a positive response from audiences. Its attraction was due to new costume designs and the lead actress, Suvanant Kongying. It was called the most beautiful series of the year.
Sequel[]
All soap opera series do not have another season but may be followed by sequel. The Thai hit series, Girl in The Glass Lamp, based on Indian legend Aladdin, had a sequel but with different casting. This series found as only sequel until 2000's hit, Angkor, released its sequel in the late of 2006. Meanwhile, a remake of Poot Mae Nam Khong is planning to produce a sequel after the question for audience appeared on its ending. One of the highest rating series of all time, Kom Faek now announced its sequel as well. Sawan Biang is one of the two series with the highest rating of all time. The lakorn's leads were played by the talented Ann Thongprasom and Ken Theeradeth, although no sequel is in sight.

- Dao Pra Sook became the most popular series in the 1990s and one of the first of leading the Thai soap opera reputation into aboard screen within the highest rate drama at 1994 including several foreign release. The highest rated country after Thailand, is Cambodia with giving the nickname for Suvanant Kongying as the morning star as well as the title of the series.
- Susan Khon Pen is a series which mostly remake as at least three times just in only one channel.
- Sisa Marn is noted the scariest series along with Pob Pee Fa and Tayat Asoon.
